As a way of introduction; this was my special guest spot on INDIE 1031's Coup d'état show, the week that my band Wild Colonials was releasing a single, "Heaven & Hell" from the Hilary Swank film CONVICTION. Preparing for the show, I was inspired by the knowledge that this was an internet world-wide broadcast. I had to send out numerous emails to friends and family about the show that included their specific time zone. Not knowing what to play besides some favs (Cash, Bowie, Beatles, Strummer), I saw it was Leonard Cohen's birthday that week (great!) I knew Johnny Cash had covered him. It was the end of summer so I did a search on iTunes under "Summertime" and found the cool version by Sam Cooke, and to discover not only was it released this same week, it was also song-writer Gershwin's birthday this week as well! WOW, this ties in nicely with the concept of time-zones across decades. I wanted to spin Bryan
Ferry's "Let's Stick Together" and (guess what?)... it came out this
week as well! I knew I wanted to play a track from Joe Strummers debut
solo LP, did a Google search and (guess what?!?) it came out this very
week as well!!! I wanted to play the German version of Bowie's "Heroes"
and (I am not making this up)... It was released this same week!!! So then I looked in a RnR Diary book, found a few other birthdays (plus the birth and death of Marc Bolan within two weeks), and knew the rare cool original, "Tainted Love" was by Marc's wife Gloria. And now the entire show was musically and historically tapped into this week in time!
Half way through my show, INDIE Program Director Nick asked if I was interested in hosting my own radio show on INDIE. I said yes! He said, "This is going great and the TIME idea is a great concept for a show." And within the hour, the concept was fully formed as ALL TIME IS NOW!
Here is my guest spot, enjoy...
